Singing Across Divides: Music and Intimate Politics in Nepal
November 13, 1:30pm - 3:00pmMānoa Campus, Moore Hall 319
Dr. Anna Stirr, Associate Professor of Asian Studies, will speak on her new book. An ethnographic study of music, performance, migration, and circulation, Singing Across Divides examines how forms of love and intimacy are linked to changing conceptions of political solidarity and forms of belonging, through the lens of Nepali dohori song. Dohori is improvised, dialogic singing, performed between men and women, with a primary focus on romantic love. The book tells the story of dohori芒鈧劉s relationship with changing ideas of Nepal as a nation-state in the aftermath of Nepal芒鈧劉s ten-year civil war.
