TUESDAY March 14 :

Lecture: I/digi-I? Reading the ‘digital double’: new aesthetics and technoculture in contemporary/Bharatanatyam choreographies with Dr. Suparna Banerjee
Drawing on contemporary/Bharatanatyam practice, this lecture will discuss how new dance aesthetics are reconfigured through digitisation of the body.
THURSDAY March 16:

Lecture: Indian Dance Forms and Films with Dr. Angana Jhaveri
This presentation is an introduction to some of the best known Indian Classical Dance forms through films made in India and includes a comparison of dance documentaries on Bharata Natyam made by established film makers.
2PM – 3:15PM
Lecture: Raslila: a cosmic dance, a temple ceremony, a theatre arts dissertation with Dr. Angana Jhaveri
A personal, experiential journey.
3:15PM – 4:30PM
Lecture: Choreographing/researching heterotopia: (dis/re)located places and lived temporalities with Dr. Suparna Banerjee
Contemporary Bharatanatyam practitioners in Britain have utilized disparate city places and objects, either physically or through digital technology to create new spatio-temporal aesthetics. This lecture will discuss Michel Foucault’s conceptualization of ‘heterotopia’ and examine how relationships among these fleeting places in contemporary dances fit in with his conceptualization.

Guest Lecturers and Workshop Instructors:
Dr. Suparna Banerjee
Scholar, Artist, Dance WriterSuparna Banerjee is an independent scholar, artist and dance writer from India. She obtained her PhD in Dance Studies from the University of Roehampton, UK. She is trained in Bharatanatyam dance and has received several awards for her performances and teaching. Her choreographies have been showcased in many countries, including Germany, France, Belgium, Switzerland, the USA and the UK.

Angana Jhaveri feels extremely fortunate to have been born to a classical dancer in India the land of timeless traditions and spiritual masters. She trained early with her mother, her sisters and their guru from Manipur and performed with the Jhaveri Sisters Dance Company all over India and abroad. To compliment her interest in classical dance she received a Masters in Ancient Indian Culture and then a PhD on the Raslila Dance Theater of Manipur from Michigan State University, funded by the then JDR 3rd Fund (Asian Cultural Council).
