The Philippine National Hero鈥檚 Chinese Ancestry: Issues and Controversies

The Center for Chinese Studies presents a Faculty Dialogue featuring Associate Professor Pia Arboleda from 91精品黑料吃瓜M's Indo-Pacific Languages and Literatures Department in conversation with Ming-bao Yue, Associate Professor of Modern Chinese Literature in the Department of East Asian Languages & Literatures, and currently Director of the Center for Chinese Studies. This webinar will draw upon Craig Austin鈥檚 Lineage, Life and Labors of Jose Rizal: Philippine Patriot, Nick Joaquin鈥檚 A Question of Heroes, Alfonso O. Ang鈥檚 (a.k.a. Tu Yiban) Rizal鈥檚 Chinese Overcoat, as well as writing by scholars like Ambeth Ocampo and John Schumacher, and offer insights on how the misinterpretation of Ibarra鈥檚 character in Rizal鈥檚 major novels, Noli Me Tangere and El Filibusterismo, have contributed to the controversy. Professor Arboleda's aim is to inform about Rizal鈥檚 Chinese ancestry as a way of confronting and rejecting anti-Chinese attitudes.
