A Glimpse of India Beyond Bollywood

Mark Twain called India “the cradle of the human race…the mother of history, the grandmother of legend.” Representations of the country in media, social media, art, theatre, film and literature have both perpetuated myths about what it is to be Indian, and also demolished stereotypes. Multilingual, multicultural and multiethnic, India is a composite of many ideas, ideologies and identities. It is miraculous how we have managed to survive in relative harmony within the dynamic of diversity. In this presentation, I hope to show different facets of being “Indian,” contemporary as well as historical, and being Indian in a foreign land. Dr. Padmini Bhuyan Boruah is Professor and Head of the Department of ELT, Gauhati University, India. She is currently affiliated to the University of San Diego, California, on a Fulbright teaching and research fellowship. Dr Boruah’s areas of interest include English Language Teacher Education practices, with focus on action research.
