Seasons and the Sea
May 2, 3:00pm - 7:00pmMānoa Campus, Waikiki Aquarium
On Thursday, May 2, 2019, Waikiki Aquarium celebrates the beginning of Kauwela, the warm season in Hawai鈥榠, with Seasons and the Sea. Held in partnership with the Honolulu Mayor's Office of Culture and the Arts, Seasons and the Sea is a unique cultural experience complete with Hawaiian demonstrations and a sunset observation in the park.
"The official changing of the seasons, from Ho鈥榦ilo (wet season) to Kauwela (hot or warm-dry season), is a significant occurrence in Hawaiian history, and we鈥檙e proud to partner once again with the Mayor鈥檚 Office of Culture and the Arts to host this special event for the community," said Dr. Andrew Rossiter, director of the Waikiki Aquarium.
From 5:30 to 7:00 p.m., cultural advisor Sam 鈥極hukani鈥榦hi鈥榓 Gon III will lead a free sunset ceremony through chant, hula and mo鈥榦lelo (storytelling) as the sun sets into the crown of Pu鈥榰 o Kapolei, a rare occurrence that happens only once a year. This year's mo鈥榦lelo will feature a discussion on Kamehameha I, and with it, the end of the kapu system. The cultural sunset observance will take place on the Ewa (west) side of the Aquarium grounds.
Prior to the ceremony, stop by the Waikiki Aquarium from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. to take part in Hawaiian crafts and cultural activities, included with admission to the Aquarium. The cultural demonstrations include a display of traditional Hawaiian items related to hula, pu for blowing, instruments, and several other items.
Aquarium admission is $12 for non-members; $8 for Kama鈥榓ina and military with ID; $5 for senior citizens and juniors ages 4 to 12 and free for children three and under and Friends of the Waikiki Aquarium (FOWA). For more information, call (808) 923-9741 or visit www.waikikiaquarium.org.
