North Korea and Myanmar: Divergent Paths

The stories of North Korea and Myanmar (Burma) are two of Asia芒鈧劉s most difficult. For decades they were infamous as the region芒鈧劉s most militarized and repressed countries, self-isolated and under sanctions by the international community while, from Singapore to Japan, the rest of Asia saw historic wealth creation and growing middle class security. Andray Abrahamian, author of the recent book North Korea and Myanmar: Divergent Paths (McFarland, 2018), will examine and compare the political histories of North Korea and transitioning Myanmar.

Andray Abrahamian is an Honorary Fellow at Macquarie University and a member of the U.S. National Committee on North Korea. He is also a Research Fellow at Pacific Forum CSIS, Affiliate Scholar at the East-West Center and an Adjunct Fellow at the Griffith Asia Institute. A frequent media commentator on North Korea issues (the Economist, CNN, Reuters and the AP), he has taught and lectured at Yangon University, Ulsan University, UC Berkeley, Harvard, SOAS, and Seoul National University. He has a PhD is from the University of Ulsan and an MA from the University of Sussex and has lived in Myanmar and visited North Korea dozens of times.
