“Nu‘a kai (piled ocean): Record-breaking Honolulu sea levels and future implicationsâ€
During the summer of 2017, the State of Hawai‘i experienced multiple periods of record-high sea levels leading to an unprecedented number of tidal flooding episodes.
In this talk, we will break down recent sea level variability recorded by the Honolulu tide gauge to (1) identify the “stack†of contributions that produced the anomalous water levels and (2) discuss how often similar conditions will occur in coming decades and beyond.
